Top 5 FUN facts about SEA OTTERS
Hi and welcome back to my blog! (This is to make up for missing yesterday.) I've noticed that my blogs have been more...creative! But today I wanted to make it more based on factual thongs about Sea Otters if you know what I mean?
ANYWAYS! Here I've found, in my opinion, the top five most fun facts about Sea Otters to show you! How I've ordered this is '5' is probably like the least fun fact and '1' is like the, "OMG! That's the most fun and cute fact I've heard!" fact. So lets get right into it!
5. Sea Otters can hold their breath underwater for up to 5 minutes at a time! This helps them forage for food underwater.
4. Sea Otters have the thickest fur of any animal! This helps them keep warm in cold waters. Kind of like a fur coat for winter time! Since their fur is so thick, they have to groom it very often, which is why Sea Otters are usually seen rubbing the bodies.
3. Did you know that Sea Otters are a keystone species? This means that they hold their eco-system together, and without them, it will fall apart. (I've tried explaining this to my friends so many times and they still don't get it...)
So basically, Sea Otters eat Sea Urchins. And Sea Urchins eat kelp, which like long sea weed. Now kelp provides homes for lots of fish and other marine life. This means that without the Sea Otters keeping Sea Urchin numbers in check, the Sea Urchins would eat the kelp. This will leave small fish and other animals without a home, meaning they could also eventually go extinct. Does that make sense?
2. FUN FACT! Sea Otters have a little fold of fur right under their armpits where they can store small things temporarily!
So, for example, if a Sea Otter was eating clam and they got some stuck in their teeth. They could put the clam in their little fur pocket, take the food out of their teeth, and then take the clam from their pocket and keep eating! That's amazing!
1. This fact is number 1 because I think it's super cute!
Sea Otters rest holding hands! They are usually in very big groups and will rest together, this is called a raft of Sea Otters! This is so they don't drift off to sea. They have also been found to wrap themselves in kelp to stop them from drifting away.
Isn't that adorable???
ANYWAYS, thank you so much for reading! Which fact do you think was the best? Feel free to comment below! I hope you enjoyed and I will hopefully see you again next Tuesday! Bye!
